Paris Fascinating Cities Monaco Books 9783899445374 Books
The first 23 pages of this book are about the history of Paris, consisting of text with a few small photos. The last 10 pages are very detailed maps of all the different neighborhoods of Paris. The rest of the book is one gorgeous photo after another with just a few sentences of text per page. The quality of the photos in the book is outstanding. This book did an excellent job including both day photos and night photos of Paris. About three quarters of the book is photos of buildings and other structures, and one quarter of the book is photos of people in parks, cafes, and museums. The vibrant photos definitely make Paris come alive.
The book includes all the famous places in Paris. A few examples are the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, the Opera Garnier, the Pompidou Center, the Musee d'Orsay, and the Sacre-Coeur. It also has photos of neighborhoods like the Latin Quarter and Montmartre, as well as places outside the city like Versailles, Disneyland Paris, and Fontainebleau.
I've seen every photo book on Paris, and this is one of my two favorites along with "Spectacular Paris" by William G. Scheller. To compare the two, "Spectacular Paris" is a much larger book (12" high x 16" wide) so that's very nice. (It's hard to go wrong with a book that has some photos spanning two pages which results in photos of Paris that are 12" high and 32" wide. It's almost like a book full of posters!) But it's also an expensive book and more about buildings and places rather than people which results in it being a more static book and doesn't convey action and vibrancy as well as this book does.
If you are only going to buy one photo book on Paris, I think that "Paris Fascinating Cities" is the best book to get.
